Question: Hi skid i have a vintage scorcher and super champ both have a black sport tuned motor and have Mtroniks Viper RV 15 ESC was thinking of getting lipo batteries for longer run times and a little more punch do they give you that? and do i need to change anything else to run them? do you think they are worth the change? thank you Skid

The wise one answers:

Hi! I personally don't think that Lipo batteries in a vintage model is really the way to go for many reasons. By upgrading the motor and using good NiMH or NiCD batteries you can get plenty of performance. Lipos will give you good performance indeed and as they are so light they help a lot but the problem is dealing with them day to day. Disadvantages to Lipos:
  • They require special charging, you have to be careful not to charge them too quickly
  • If you discharge them below a certain voltage you can throw them in the bin as they can't be recovered
  • Short them out and again it's in the bin
  • They cost more than standard batteries
  • They can explode
  • You have to careful what temperature to store them at
  • They're only any good for a certain number of runs
And the list goes on... I would spend the money on other things for your vintage models honestly.
