Question: Hi Skid, I am painting my SS two tone colours. I have primed it then sprayed the light colour first. Then I apply the masking tape to do the darker colour on the bottom half. After I let it dry for 24hrs I remove the tape only to have it remove chunks of the first colour. What am I doing wrong? This has happened twice now and due to the time it takes between coats and drying It's very very anoying.

The wise one answers:

Well it depends on what paint and masking tape you are using. I assume you're "keying" the plastic and priming before you paint the first colour? Make sure the plastic is sanded first with 1200 wet and dry or even 1000 grade so it's not shiny at all and has an even matt finish. Thoroughly clean and then prime and then apply your paint. Always apply thin even coats and allow each to dry before the next coat. Leave to dry in a warm place for at least 24 hours before any masking. I also recommend using low tack masking tape designed for this kind of thing (Tamiya masking tape is very good) and avoid cheap decorating masking tape for household use. Don't be tempted to use a hairdryer on your paint or your masking tape to speed things up and remove the masking tape as soon as you can. I hope this helps!
