Hello Professor Skid,
I need advice for masking and painting headlights and other plastic parts on my Hornet. After priming the assembled light and painting the front in glossy white (using Tamiya X-paints), I waited 24 hours for the last layer of paint to dry. Then I covered the front using Tamiya masking tape and painted the back side of the light in glossy black. After drying, I removed the masking tape and discovered the surface of the white paint to be damaged. So, Professor, what did I wrong and please tell me how I can mask such parts properly without ruining the finish? There's Greg Martin waiting to be painted, and I don't think he will be very happy if he is looking ugly as sin.
Kind regards
The wise one answers:
It pretty much always means you didn't leave it long enough for the paint to dry before masking over it. The X paints go on pretty thick and really should be left a few days before masking. For these lights I actually paint them by hand without masking, they have a groove around to help keep the line straight. The alternative is to spray them white first, leave for 24 hours, mask and then spray black for a perfect result.
